Goldman Sachs believes the current downturn in the energy sector has created attractive opportunities for investors. The energy sector is down 9.4% in 2023, the largest decline among the 11 major S & P 500 sectors. Goldman attributes the energy sector's underperformance to a combination of macroeconomic conditions. Mild winter temperatures drove lower natural gas prices, and Russian oil supplies were s well higher-than-expected. Goldman also picked oil services company Halliburton as an underappreciated energy name.
HOUSTON, Feb 14 (Reuters) - A rout in natural gas prices will hurt first-quarter earnings and cash flows at gas producers as hedges - the industry's version of price insurance - were inadequate to offset the expected losses, analysts and industry experts said. About 36% of 2023 gas production was hedged at the end of September, according to consultancy Energy Aspects, which tracked 40 publicly traded gas producers. EQT Corp (EQT.N), the top U.S. producer of natural gas, last month said it expects a $4.6 billion loss on derivatives for 2022, and net cash settlements of $5.9 billion. These transactions have a producer buy an agreement to sell natural gas at one price, called a put, while also selling a put at a lower price in hopes of pocketing the premium from its buyer. Were gas prices to average $2.36 per mmcf, the company would pay out 14 cents per mmcf, reducing the gains from the hedge.
It should be another good year for energy stocks, according to Goldman Sachs. XLE 1Y mountain Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund's strong performance Goldman's bottom-up price targets imply 13% market cap weighted total return to the energy stocks it covers. The firm's buy-rated stocks have an implied 26% average total return. Of the stocks Goldman rates a buy, several have upside north of 40% to the firm's price targets. The stocks with the highest total return are Antero Resources and Cheniere Energy , both at 48%, according to Goldman Sachs.
I do prefer something that gives you that dividend because you know in the Investing Club, we bought Coterra. But Antero is very inexpensive, and I'm not going to say anything bad about it." Loading chart...Tesla : "Tesla has got the worst chart I've ever seen, and that's what's driving things. People are very worried that [CEO Elon Musk] has to sell a lot of Tesla in order to be able to pay whatever he has to pay for Twitter. I say that Tesla is not cheap, but I'm not going to let the chart determine the fact that I think it's a decent situation."
